A summer of Shakespeare at Cawdor Castle

post

We are delighted to announce our Open Air Theatre program for the summer with three fantastic touring companies presenting their own unique take on Shakesperean Classics.

This year’s the program will include; As You Like It, MacHamLear and Midsummer Night’s Dream.

With the magnificent Castle as the backdrop, outdoor theatre has been loved and celebrated by local audiences for over a decade at Cawdor Castle.

Kicking off the season on 7th July will be Three Inch Fools’ brand-new production of the As You Like It. With musical instruments in hand, the hapless troupe of actors perform one of Shakespeare’s most chaotic comedies with endless costume changes and confusion.

Later in July, Shakespeare lovers can also take part in a unique experiment that will answer the question keeping literary scholars up at night… no, not ‘To be or not to be?’ instead, which play is the best the Bard has to offer? MacHamLear is a farcical piece of new writing from award-winning playwright Michael Davies that pits Macbeth, Hamlet and King Lear against each other. Heartbreak Productions invites you to come and cast your vote at the battle of the Bard, have your say at Cawdor Castle on Sunday 30th July.

Closing the open air theatre season at Cawdor Castle for the most northern stop on their tour are HandleBards; cycling Shakespearean actors who carry their full set, props and costumes on the back of their bikes whilst they tour Shakespeare plays across the UK. They will be performing a hilarious, high-octane production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Saturday 26th August. Four young lovers find themselves lost in a magical forest, where the Fairy King and Queen are fighting for the possession of a changeling boy. A group of amateur actors head to the same forest to rehearse for a play. Humans and fairies collide and hilarity ensues.

These companies always put on a fantastic show and we are delighted to continue to bring such high quality productions to the Highlands.

Gates open 1 hour before the performance and ticket holders are welcome to explore our historic gardens before the performance starts. So pack a picnic, dress for all weathers and enjoy a marvelous evening of relaxed theatre this summer!
