Auchindoune House Biodynamic Open Gardens Day

August 4, 2018 @ 2:30 pm - 6:00 pm

An exciting opportunity to explore the gardens of Lady Cawdors’ Summer House in the Scottish Highlands. The gardens are a unique blend of traditions and have been organically managed since early 90’s and Biodynamically the last three years.

The tour will begin from the Tibetan Garden with its living links to Tibet. Its creation dates back to the 1920’s when the 5th Earl Cawdor brought a collection of plants, flowers and shrubs from a legendary expedition to Tibet. Today Lady Cawdor actively continues the restoration of this tranquil garden along the Cawdor burn. Himalayan blue poppies, rhododendrons and primulas are some of the trademark species.

We continue to the Arboredum which was planted to mark the millenium and is a blend of Tibetan specimen and native trees. The surrounding traditional hedgerows attract the thriving wild life of the area.
From early Spring to late Autumn one can experience an explosion of colours and aromas in The Cottage Garden, around the house. Climbing roses, wisterias, actinidia, jasmines, herbs and perennial flowers are the protagonists.

We resume in the Kitchen and Cut Flower Walled Garden which was designed by the well known Arabella Lennox Boyd. It is traditionally laid out in box hedge beds with all the planting done geometrically. The orchard has more than fifty fruit trees mainly apples, pears and plums and an array of soft fruits including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, gooseberries and currants. The cut flower season starts early with tulips and continues with iris and roses. A variety of flowers including calendulla, cornflowers, larkspur, gypsophylla and sweet peas would keep until late Autumn.
Pieces of Art by James Parker can be found in various locations of the gardens, blending harmoniously with nature and revealing a deeper meaning to the viewer. All is one.

Tea and coffee will be offered in the walled garden at the end of the tour. Books on Biodynamics and other relevant material will be available for purchase.
