Cawdor Castle
This, the great hall of the castle, dates from the 16th century or before, and has been frequently remodelled, the last major alteration being the insertion of the plain, splendid fireplace in 1684, embellished with the Calder family emblems of the stag's head and buckle. At the opposite end of the room is a minstrel's gallery. Calder was an old spelling of Cawdor.

  • Lady Alice Egerton, by Sir Peter Lely.
  • Lady Emma Hamilton by George Romney.
  • Lady Caroline Campbell, daughter of the 5th Earl of Carlisle, by Sir William Beechey.
  • Rear Admiral Sir George Campbell, by Sir William Beechey. As a naval captain he had been one of Nelson's 'Band of Brothers'.
  • John Campbell, 1st Baron Cawdor and 19th Thane, in an Italian fur-Iined vermillion coat. Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1778, for which commission he charged £153.
